By means of eTelligence, EWE is testing the use of new intelligent power supply systems together with electricity customers in Cuxhaven and other project partners from research and industry.

A target-group-oriented iPod App was to be built following the latest usability criteria in design and development. It should check the consumption and costs of electricity of each electric appliance as well as from the whole household and calculate the CO2 emissions.

Objectives

Through the app all project participants receive direct and easily comprehensible information on their individual use behavior. The app clearly visualizes power consumption and thus enhances understanding and awareness of the issue of energy consumption within the consumer’s own four walls. This creates a basis for a permanent change in power use and more energy efficiency among household customers.

Implementation

We have developed an innovative and flexible iPod app for the eTelligence research project in close cooperation with the customer and BTC.

In several interactive views the eTelligence app display provides information on power consumption, power costs and CO2 emissions. Visualization of their power consumption helps household customers to identify electricity hogs and adjust their consumer behavior accordingly.

The app’s zoom function additionally enables precise analysis of power consumption over the last seven days. It’s even possible to zoom in to an accuracy of 15 minutes. Graphic and tabular displays provide for a rapid overview as well as a direct comparison of your own consumption with households of a similar size.

In the news section of the eTelligence app users will find up-to-date information on the research project and on electricity in general. Moreover, all news on rate events is available here. Users find out about the current time-dependent electricity prices corresponding to their rate. This information, for example, enables customers to use power-intensive electrical appliances at times of the day with low power prices, so they can save money and protect the environment.
